I"m writing my paper...really!

Okay, so had to look something up on IMDb for my paper, and somehow my search leads me to Indy 4. I know, it's amazing how these things happen. So then I found this:

John Hurt ... Abner Ravenwood

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, guys, but....wasn't Abner dead in Raiders? I seem to recall:

Indy: Where's Abner?
Marion: Abner's dead.
Indy: Oh, Marion, I'm sorry.

what the crap is Abner doing there? If appears alive that's going to be one old Abner. Cuz the thing with Abner being dead, Marion ending up with the staff piece because he's dead...fairly important to Raiders, you know? I suppose it could be a flasback, or it's just there to make me wonder rather than doing my scene analysis of 10 Things I Hate About You....
